Campers and barbecuers must stop cooking their food in aluminium foil, as per a new warning issued by the Centre for Food Safety and Quality (CFS).
Affiliated to the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, the centre has cautioned restaurants and residents in Oman to avoid this habit after they found aluminium foil to have a direct interaction with the food.
This can cause harm to the consumer.
Aluminium foil, or tin foil, is a paper-thin, shiny sheet of aluminium metal used for a variety of purposes, including packing, insulation and transportation. It’s also widely available in grocery stores for household use.
A study conducted by Healthline – an online US-based health portal – states that cooking with aluminium can seep the metal into food in small quantities, thereby resulting in an increase in the aluminium content in your meal.
It further adds that cooking red meats in the foil can increase the aluminium content by 89 and 378 per cent – and an increased consumption of dietary aluminum has been suggested as a potential factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
