A group of employees at the Ministry of Education (MoE) have been arrested over embezzlement charges, the Oman Government Communication (OGC) confirmed on Wednesday (27 March).
News had been circulating on social media since Monday (25 March) regarding the arrest of three employees who allegedly embezzled RO16 million.
The news was confirmed on Wednesday by the government’s official Twitter handle but the amount of money and number suspects haven’t been revealed.
OGC said that the Public Prosecution has started a formal investigation of the suspects in coordination with the State Audit Institution and the MoE.
The government has called upon residents to avoid spreading rumours and defamation.
As per the Omani law, embezzlement punishment is imprisonment of 3-5 years and confiscation of all embezzled assets.
