With the Ironman 70.3 competition fast approaching, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and organisers of the event have reported that major road sections in the capital will be blocked off from the public.
The triathlon event – which is expected to host more than 1,000 competitors from over 54 countries – will begin tomorrow (March 1, 2019) from 7am.
In a statement to local media, the ROP stated: “Traffic will be blocked as announced: for the cycling portion, traffic will be closed at the ministry street until Al Thaqafa roundabout between 7 and 8am. Sultan Qaboos street, from Qurum Bridge towards Darsait, between 6 AM to 12 at noon, Matrah Corniche from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM, Darsait bridge from 6:30 AM to 12 at noon, Wadi Adai bridge (to and from Al Amerat) from 8 AM to 12 at noon.
“One lane in Al Amerat street will close from 8 AM to 12 at noon, as will one lane from Al Saidiyah street in Sidab (from 7 AM to 12 noon) and one lane from the street leading to the Children’s Museum will be blocked from 9 AM to 2 PM.”
“As for the running course, Al Sarooj street will close from 6 AM to 2 PM and al Qurm’s road will close from 10 AM to 2 PM.”
The Ironman 70.3 competition will be held with three events; swimming for 1.9kms, cycling for 90kms, and then running for 21.1kms.
UPDATE: Meanwhile, the Muscat Municipality announced that the 18th November Street will remain closed between the evening of Thursday, 28th Feb until early morning on Sunday, 3rd March for maintenance works.
