August 10th 2018 turned out to be a tragic evening in the Wilayat of Dhofar after two Omani men lost their lives while attempting to save two Saudi Arabian girls from drowning.
Hamyar, 25 and Tariq, 21, who reportedly hailed from the Al Aishi village in the Wilayat of Bahla were known to have been spending time at the Wadi Darbat when they heard the girls crying out for help.
According to local sources, the girls slipped and fell into the water while trying to click selfies.
In a bid to save them, the two Omani men jumped into the water. However, neither knew how to swim.
Their efforts weren’t in vain, though, as the girls were brought to safety. But, the gushing water of the wadi wouldn’t spare the two men.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered at 2.50pm.
“They are heroes and we are so proud of them. This comes as no surprise as they would always offer help to others. May their souls rest in peace,” a sobbing Mustafa Al Hinai (Tariq’s brother) was quoted as telling local daily, Times of Oman.
Subsequently, the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) announced on Friday that they had tried to rescue two citizens from the wadi.
In its statement, PACDA said: “The rescue teams at the Civil Defence and Ambulance Department in Dhofar responded to the reports of the drowning of the two citizens in Wadi Darbat, where they were rescued. The ambulance crew exerted painstaking efforts by providing emergency medical care, but they couldn’t be saved.”
“PACDA in Dhofar continues to secure tourists sites and educate visitors at tourist spots by providing advice, distributing awareness booklets and informing them about the risks and how to avoid them,” it added.
