Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Culture has extended its arms to Zanzibar and have begun the renovation of the once iconic ‘House of Wonders’.

The ministry made the announcement online. It tweeted: “The Ministry of Heritage and Culture launched the first phase of the comprehensive renovation and rehabilitation of the ‘House of Wonders’ in Zanzibar, a landmark site in the World Heritage List.”

The ‘House of Wonders’ or ‘Bait Al Ajaib’ (in Arabic) was once a prominent building in the Stone Town, in Zanzibar, but is still the largest and tallest building of Stone Town and occupies a prominent place facing the Forodhani Gardens on the old town’s seafront.

It was built on the orders of Barghash bin Said, the second Sultan of Zanzibar, and it is reportedly said to be located on the site of the 17th-century palace of Zanzibari queen Fatuma.
