Day three of the FIFA World Cup in Russia saw four cliffhangers – the prime of which was the duel between Argentina and World Cup debutants Iceland.

The match ended in a one-all draw as the “g.o.a.t: greatest of all time”, Lionel Messi, missed a crucial penalty in the 64th minute courtesy an emphatic save by a diving Hannes Þór Halldórsson.

Iceland’s Alfreð Finnbogason had earlier helped his team equalise in the 23rd minute after Argentina’s Sergio Aguero found the end of the Icelandic net in the 19th minute.

Argentina dominated the ball with 78 percent of the possession and produced 27 shots on goal, as opposed to Iceland’s 8, but the scoreboard failed to tick after the 23rd minute.

France opened its World Cup account with a win against the Aussies, albeit, not in the most convincing fashion. The Australians had the Frenchmen working hard – and it was a penalty that helped them open their account.

Later, in the 62nd minute, Australian captain Mile Jedinak struck the equalising goal. However, French attacking-midfielder Paul Pogba had other plans, as he knocked one into the far end of the net in the 80th minute.

Peru vs Denmark (0-1)

Denmark’s Yussuf Poulsen played spoilsport for Peru – who was marking their return to the World Cup finals after 36 years.

The night had earlier turned sour for Peru after Christian Cueva missed a penalty opportunity; sending the ball sailing high and away from the post.

Croatia vs Nigeria (2-0)

The final game of the night witnessed some exciting, but less than competitive, football. The match eventually slipped in favour of the Europeans following a string of silly errors by the Nigerian players.

Sloppy work by midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo sent the ball bouncing into the left corner of their own net, thereby giving Croatia their lead in the 32nd minute. The win was finally sealed when Luka Modric took charge of a 71st minute penalty and landed the ball in the net.
