Spain’s World Cup campaign has taken an unexpected turn even before it has begun after the sacking of their head coach, Julen Lopetegui.

The Spanish Football Association sacked their manager one day before the start of the World Cup in Russia. Spain’s sporting director Fernando Hierro has since take over as the head coach.

In a press conference in Moscow today [Wednesday, June 13], the Spanish FA (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales reportedly announced that Lopetegui’s behaviour in the build-up to Russia 2018 was “unacceptable”, having agreed to take over at Real Madrid upon the conclusion of Spain’s World Cup campaign.
