Cyclone Mekunu: Over 250 workers evacuated, 16 rescued in Salalah

A total of 260 workers were evacuated from boats in the port of Salalah, while 16 expats were rescued in the Wilayat of Mirbat, the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MoTC) and the Public Authority for Civil Defense and Ambulance (PACDA) announced as Cyclone Mekunu made landfall in Dhofar.

According to officials, the workers were onboard wooden fishing and commercial boats. In a statement online, MoTC said, “The boats were located in Salalah port. They were moved to a safer location by experts at the port.” The workers were transported to the rescue shelter centre in coordination with the Royal Oman Police.

Meanwhile, search and rescue personnel from the Public Authority for Civil Defense and Ambulance( PACDA) rescued 16 expats.

PACDA said, “Officials managed to rescue 16 Asian nationals who were held captive in water in the industrial area in the Wilayat of Mirbat. They were evacuated and taken to shelters.”
