A change in the driving test rules will allow male drivers to apply for a driving licence for cars fitted with automatic transmissions, an official source from Royal Oman Police has confirmed.
This came on the heels of a survey that showed that a majority of driving instructors in Oman support the move to allow both genders to choose the transmission type.
Brigadier Eng. Mohammed bin Awad Al Rawas, Director General of Traffic said in a statement that the decision came after “demands from the community to allow everyone to obtain a driving license to choose between automatic transmission or manual”.
The law will come into effect in January 1st, 2019.
“The decision was based on the study conducted by the General Directorate of Traffic and included all driving teachers in all governorates of the Sultanate,” the brigadier added.
At the moment, males are not allowed to learn driving using the automatic transmission.
