Football fans in Oman were unimpressed with the Ministry of Sport Affairs’ clarification on the ‘dusty seats’ on the stands of Sultan Qaboos Complex in Bausher, which hosted the AFC Asia Cup semi-final on Tuesday.
The ministry said on Friday: “All facilities at the Sultan Qaboos Complex, including the seating area, are cleaned everyday especially before any local or international match,”.
“But as it’s known, a big commercial project is being built near the stadium which releases sand and dust not only towards the stadium, but all-across the area,” the ministry explained.
The ministry said that the images showing dusty chairs belong only to a small part of the stadium. “It is seen that the pictures (the ones shared on Twitter) were of empty seats,” the ministry stated, adding that it contacted the construction project company to take the necessary measures to prevent this from happening again.
The stadium hosted Saudi team Al Hilal, which is popular among Omani fans, and Perspolis, an Iranian team.
Following the match which ended in a draw, Saudi and Omani fans voiced their frustration on Twitter.
