Hippie Fashion

From on-trend halo braids, which are perfect for festivals and fun, to intricate plaited up-dos – it’s time to take some inspiration from hippie fashion, says Penny Fray

It’s a fine line between this season’s get-up and a Fleetwood Mac tribute band, as both hipsters and designers remain devout retrophiles this autumn.

Alas the 70s boho look is still going strong. But you can finally ditch the gladiators and cheesecloth tunics – as autumn offers a more sumptuous take on summer’s hippie look.

Tapestry, embellishment and multiple textures combine for the latest take on this opulent trend. Make a nod to it by investing in even more tan and tasselled accessories. Go crazy with tribal jewellery and don’t be afraid to layer paisley prints with a healthy dose of shearling or velvet.

Think Californian rock star meets hippie chick hitching a ride through the desert with floaty chiffon dresses, worn suede boots, fedora and the faint whiff of patchouli oil. You can almost smell the sense of freedom. What’s not to love?

Of course, you may want to avoid venturing into fancy dress territory by opting for only a couple of retro inspired pieces at a time. Add braids and natural makeup – and maybe leave those Stevie Nicks albums behind.

Burberry Prorsum’s runway collection cleverly captures the new season’s exotic and bohemian vibe. This silk midi dress with its embroidered bodice is both flattering and fabulous. The RO1,200 price tag may be a bit hefty, but you can easily find affordable alternatives in most of Muscat’s malls and souks

Penny’s tips on how to master the look:

1. Take inspiration from the style icons of the past – Google image names like Talitha Getty and Ali MacGraw. Then mix modern with retro pieces for a fresher take on the look. Isabel Marant does it best this season.
2. Make the most of authentic Omani heritage with silver jewellery and tapestries made by local artisans.
3. Invest in luxurious fabrics in rich desert colours – from camel to sunset red.
