The onset of the much-awaited Khareef season in Salalah brings with it good news for potential visitors, with the Ministry of Tourism recently launching the Traveller’s Oasis website, which acts as a virtual travel guide to the Sultanate’s second-largest city.
The website offers all the information a tourist could want, from recommending a list of different services, activities and places to discover in Dhofar, to offering car rental services and a potential list of diverse accommodation. The website is accessible in both English and Arabic.
Initially set up in 2013, the Traveller’s Oasis is a temporary rest area housed at the Salalah City gate. The information centre stays open 24/7 from June 20 to September 20 to help the thousands of tourists who visit Salalah during Khareef. It offers amenities like prayer halls, toilets and a children’s play area, all free of charge.
This year has seen the Traveller’s Oasis go digital as the Ministry of Tourism seeks to stay abreast of new technological trends. To make it more widely available, the website will also be launched as a free app on both Android and iOS. Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism has also recently inaugurated a round-the-clock call centre also based in the Traveller’s Oasis.
With each passing year, the number of visitors to Salalah continues to grow, with people from all over the GCC travelling to Oman to escape the intense heat. Last year, 268,386 tourists visited Salalah between June 21 and August 11, representing a 73.4 per cent increase on the previous year.
