If you find packing one of the worst things about going on vacation, read on. Penny Fray has all the beach basics covered
Packing for a week-long getaway should be easy. But if you’re anything like me, you’ll leave it until the last minute, scream, then end up cramming a whole heap of clothes in an unsuitable case, and still end up with nothing to wear.
Preparation is key when it comes to getting organised, so choose your essentials early with great swimwear, day-to-night dresses and a good-sized beach bag. They’ll take you a long way, not to mention straw hats, shades and a pair of slick sliders.
H&M, Splash and Accessorize never fail to have an interesting range of holiday stuff. The White Company and Kate Spade’s beach bags and towels are expensive, but they always last ages in my experience.
When it comes to cover-ups, hit Muscat’s souqs for cotton kaftans and versatile scarves that can double up as sarongs. This season, Kimono jackets are also in vogue and can be found in most malls. Add a bold piece of jewellery and you can go straight from your deckchair to lunch with friends.
Finally, don’t forget about your carry-on bag. Invest in something big enough to carry all your beauty essentials, handbag, entertainment and change of clothing, especially if it’s a long-haul journey. I love wheelies for ease of movement – just make sure you check your airline’s size restrictions first.

Penny’s holiday tips:
1. Don’t overpack. Think capsule wardrobe, which should include two swimsuits, a sarong, a summer dress and lightweight trousers
2. Feeling less than beach beautiful? Channel your inner allure in high-waisted briefs or a halter neck one-piece. They’re feminine and flattering.
