Children aged below 12 years are being exploited by their families to beg for money on the streets during Ramadan.
Y reported last week that more than 30 beggars, some carrying knives, were arrested during the first 10 days of the Holy Month. Many were foreigners who travel to Oman specifically to make money begging.
Twenty children aged under 12 and 38 children aged over 12 were arrested in a Ramadan beggar crackdown last year, according to figures from the Ministry of Social Development released this week.
Special centres have been set up in Buraimi, Sohar and Salalah to deal with people arrested for begging in the Sultanate.
